PHOENIX (AP) — The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is dismissing the charges against 12 protesters who were arrested in downtown Phoenix in August 2020.

But County Attorney Allister Adel says she intends to file different charges against some of these defendants based on their conduct during the protest.

Dozens of protesters marched through city streets to the front of Phoenix police headquarters and several were taken into custody and charged with felony and misdemeanor offenses.

In a statement Tuesday, Adel said that after reviewing the cases, she believes it’s in the interest of justice to dismiss the current charges.

However, she intends to file different charges against some of these defendants based on their conduct during the protest.

I have been doing great at recovery because of the good care that I got.”

Adel said she remains committed to holding those who committed criminal acts responsible.

She added that ethical rules regarding trial publicity prohibits her from trying the case in the media or saying anything that might influence a jury in the cases.
